On searching web for Apache authentication pluggin for PostgreSQL, I came across AuthPG, mod_auh_pgsql and mod_authn_dbd modules.
I tried each of them and found the mod_authn_dbd, which uses mod_dbd framework, was the only one I could easily get going with both basic and digest authentication.

Your blog helped wih getting Basic authentication going but I gave up with digest and mod_auth_pgsql....

Works for me as well, apache 2.2.14. I used htpass...

Works for me as well, apache 2.2.14.
I used htpasswd to generate the passwd to populate pgsql with, haven't seen any issues so far.

Thanks, "AuthBasicAuthoritative off" saved me a lot of trouble.

Another thing to look out for is that Auth_PG_gid_field has been renamed Auth_PG_grp_group_field - but the docs on the mod_auth_pgsql website still list the old directive.
